The Afterburner system allows players to accelerate forward at three to four times their regular flight speed. This burst of speed lasts as long as the ship has energy in the Afterburner reserves.
Store Description[]

*Gives engines tremendous burst of speed while engaged
Speed is essential to surviving modern space combat. The pilot that possesses the faster ship has more latitude in performing crucial maneuvers. The Afterburner system gives a pilot that flexibility. Using a series of magna-flux chambers, the afterburner system stores engine plasma which can be ejected to boost a ship’s top speed for a short time. However, while the system draws engine power to store plasma, the overall top speed of the ship is reduced. The total increase in speed that the afterburner system affords varies from ship to ship.
Notes[]
- One of the most effective ways to use the Afterburner is to burn until you reach top speed, then hold the slide key. This allows you to continue traveling at high speeds in one direction without depleting your Afterburner reserves.
- You can use the Afterburner while holding the reverse key. This is helpful if you need to come to a quick stop to avoid objects, dodge weapon fire, or to make yourself a harder target.
- The Afterburner is one of the three systems automatically given to the player at the start of a new game. The other two are the Lead Target Assistant and the Combat Scanner.
Trivia[]
- The Afterburner system is one of only two systems in the game that has its own designated spot on the ship's upgrade layout. The other system is the Afterburner Reserve.
- The Afterburner is one of only two systems in the game that does not appear as a rectangular tech card in the rotating shop screen. The other is the Radiation Screen system.
