Instructor Training is a contract offered at Europa Starbase.
Story[]
Just as veteran pilot Jake Logan is returning from a vacation on Mars, junior flight instructor Lorna Kirkland is fast approaching her first session to train novice pilots. AGT wants to ensure she is prepared before letting her lead the recruits, so the corporation offers to pay Logan if he evaluates Kirkland's performance on a mock training mission.
Despite a mishap with improperly set space mines, Kirkland takes Logan through a well-rounded intro to the basics of ship control and combat. Logan's approval is more than enough to confirm her ability as a teacher, and Kirkland later goes on to train beginner pilots.
Strategy[]
Breakdown[]
- Fly to Venus Training Sector.
- Destroy 15 space mines, then 6 more space mines.
- Destroy two Gar fighters.
- Disable a minelayer.
- Proceed to a navigational buoy and retrieve a crate.
Execution[]
Since this is a tutorial, there are few threats throughout the mission and plenty of simple tasks that form the basis of the game's core mechanics.
Kirkland informs you of various key commands which you don't have to perform to advance to further sections of the mission. The bulk of the mission takes place in the Venus Training Sector, where you must destroy twenty-one space mines, shoot down two mobile Gar fighters, and disable a minelayer, none of which fire on you, save for the temporarily misfiring mines by a navigational buoy. After completing these three objectives, you must retrieve a crate to complete the mission.
Trivia[]
- Although this mission is at the top of the job board, it is not a required mission and can be skipped entirely.
- In Luna Sector, one of the Makos patrolling Mira Vista Shipyards is named Argoso 914.
- The space mines in this mission are the only enemy mines in the game that do not detonate when the player comes within range of them.
- It is possible to make the training minelayer hostile. When the minelayer enters the sector, the training mines that open fire on you by the nav buoy will spawn. Destroy all the mines first (they will not appear on radar), then destroy the minelayer's powerplants. Because there are no more friendly mines to turn hostile by proximity, the minelayer fills that role and begins to shoot at you until you take shield damage, prompting Kirkland's normal dialogue as though the mines were firing at you. The minelayer will then become friendly.
