The Rory Sting is a contract offered at Alpha Starbase.
Story[]
Jake Logan rendezvous with Commander Alberion Obulo in the Hub to intercept Redship Rory and put the pirate lord back behind bars.
The plan is simple. Since Logan found out that Rory is planning to raid the light freighter Galluran, Star Patrol orders the freighter fly its normal route so they can catch Rory in the act and arrest him. Logan's role is to pose as an escort to draw out the pirates. Then Star Patrol will enter the sector and capture Rory, not kill him, so that he can serve out the sentence for all his crimes.
As Logan leads the Galluran through the Scrap Yards Sector, no ships appear on radar, and Logan wonders if the Blood Pirates learned of the sting operation.
However, no sooner than he wonders this do three Shrikes emerge from the scrap fields. Logan immediately hails Obulo, who is waiting with his strike team in Star Patrol Farpost Sector, but the pirates have jammed all transmissions. Logan is cut off from his support and left to the pirates on his own.
More Shrikes appear from the scrap yards. Logan fights them until he sees two Nighthawks approach from a distance. One of them is Redship Rory. Logan warns Rory to give up the fight and take the easy way out, but even though Rory has pieced together that Logan set him up with Star Patrol, he refuses. Logan didn't expect anything different. He cycles his ship weaponry to disable Rory's fighter.
After Logan strips Rory of his guard and the other Shrikes, he chases Rory through dense clusters of scrap and between tumbling asteroids, all while gradually working the pirate's shields down. The moment Rory's Nighthawk is damaged down to the hull, Logan fires his alternate weapon. Perfected from the months he's spent hunting ships in the Fringe, Logan's aim is true, and the disabling round makes contact with the Nighthawk. Its engines cut suddenly, and the ship drifts to a complete halt. Logan tracks with the ship the whole way through to ensure Rory isn't faking capture. He isn't.
That's when Star Patrol arrives to take over, now aware that their communications had been jammed the whole time. Rory threatens Logan with the fact that this isn't the first time he's been caught and got away, but Logan thinks this time will be different.
Back at base, Obulo thanks Logan and provides the full pay for bringing Rory in alive, noting that a career with Star Patrol might be a possibility in the near future. While government policing doesn't fit Logan's style, the fact that Star Patrol, the same organization that arrested him for the crime he was framed for back in Sol, wanted him on board was more proof that things were truly looking up. Life in the Fringe has taken on a much brighter shade, and Logan is doing better for it.
Strategy[]
Breakdown[]
- Fly to Scrap Yards Sector.
- Wait for Blood Pirates to spawn in the sector.
- Destroy 3 Shrikes, then 3 more Shrikes, then 1 Nighthawk. Disable Redship Rory.
Execution[]
To earn full pay for this mission, you must have either Tesla EMP Missiles or an EMP Projector equipped.
After you arrive in the Scrap Yards, wait by the gate to Star Patrol Farpost. After a while, three Shrikes will spawn near you. Attack them, but leave one alive until the objective "Destroy group Famine" appears on your HUD. After you destroy two ships from group Famine, three more Shrikes will appear. Shortly after, two Nighthawks spawn into the sector, one of which being Redship Rory.
Destroy the Shrikes first, then Rory's wingman. Drain Rory's shields. His ship is equipped with a Pulsar Laser, so he can afterburn away very quickly and lay down heavy fire as he comes back.
Once his shields are gone, disable Rory's ship. If you are using Tesla EMP Missiles, launching the missile while flying head-on at him is the best way to work around the ECM from Rory's Lock-On Defense. If using the EMP Projector, chase Rory down as you fire, as he will likely afterburn the moment the projectiles make contact with his ship.
When you disable him, as long as all other pirates are destroyed, he will give a few lines of dialogue and Star Patrol ships will enter the sector, signalling the end of the mission.
TNS coverage[]
Notes[]
- You can access an alternate successful ending to the mission by destroying Redship Rory rather than disabling him. However, the mission payout will be halved, netting you 6,000 credits. The resulting TNS article that is released will also report Rory's death.
Trivia[]
- If you fire on the Galluran, its captain will claim you are working with the Blood Pirates and then call Star Patrol into the sector for help. However, this has no effect on the mission, and no Star Patrol units arrive.
- If you destroy the Galluran before the pirates spawn into the sector, the mission will fail, and Commander Alberion Obulo will state that Redship Rory was tipped off to the sting operation. Destroying the Galluran after the pirates spawn, however, will have no effect on the mission.
- It is possible to make this mission unwinnable. If you destroy the first wave of pirates that spawn into the sector, group Famine, before the objective "Destroy group Famine" appears on the HUD, you cannot complete the mission, even if you destroy the other pirates and disable Redship Rory.
- Redship Rory's Nighthawk has an AGT allegiance. This is likely an accident, as AGT would be alphabetically the first and possibly default allegiance in a list of all other allegiances in the game.
